The soul is ruined (47e-48a). He thereby grounds justice, understood as the rules governing human intercourse, in his moral psychology,.e., the need to avoid distress. Human excellence can be conceived in ways that do not include the moral virtues. Third, Epictetus reminds us that we develop arete or excellence by doing. The primary importance of this account is that it is a moral psychology, an account of the soul which serves as a basis for explaining the virtues. In the first of these in a passage that has a parallel in Meno (88a ff) Socrates helps the young Cleinias to see that wisdom is a kind of knowledge that infallibly brings happiness.
This difference calls for a modification of the definitions of the virtues from Book. Even these fields today are similar to the ones that were taught by the Athenians; one in particular being medicine. His idea of the Trojan Horse reflected his arete with respect to strategy as did his craftiness in blinding Polyphemus, the Cyclops. Also, the students who come out of military school are taught that they are fighting for the state; similarly, the Spartans were taught that the state comes first. Socrates, however, seems to think that we wish for or desire only what we take to be good for. No sensible person should, and no strong-willed person would, accept rules of justice as having any legitimate authority over them. The same was true of musicians, artists, poets, etc.
